Perhaps no program series at the School is as challenging as Digital Filmmaking. It is here that the student works to earn a diploma or certificate in the creation of the moving image. He or she uses a vast set of creative options combined with an array of digital audio and visual tools. Those individuals who believe they are destined for the world of cinema directing and producing must understand the real demands of this industry. Today, one does not move to a directing or producing position through single effort study of the cinema or an "appreciation" of the art. Instead, success is a product of acquiring a diverse background of hands-on, new digital world skills that include High Definition 24p production.
This program departs from usual film study recognizing the realities of the job market. HD capability and versatility are essential to making it today. Digital filmmaking has arrived and its going higher and higher. Entry into filmmaking now requires an entire layer of added know-how.
PRODUCING FOR THE BIG SCREEN & THE PERSONAL SCREEN
Market opportunities are broader for the individual who can produce for big screen theatrical release as well as the home entertainment market. Add in industrial communications for DVD and include television, and suddenly opportunities grow when one "owns" digital know-how. Some of the production strategies covered in the program include: Documentary development, drama directing, TV commercial directing, motion graphics for titling and special FX, 2D animation for the Internet iFilm, plus 24P HD techniques that are used in Digital Filmmaking production.
The digital expansion in film releases has made special FX almost commonplace. Also, coming along rapidly is progressive scan, as well as 24 frame per second HD digital cameras like no other ever known. The talent and technical pool for the new technologies, however, lags in terms of a formal, studied approach to applying digital means in fresh and creative ways. The Digital Filmmaking program at the School of Communication Arts is as forward thinking today as the School's original work in "High-End" computer animation.
With a larger "toolkit," the program moves from the classroom to the studio and on location. The knowledge base of the successful graduate from the program includes, but is not limited to practicing…
+ the role of Director of Photography and the production crew
+ dolly, jib arm & grip techniques
+ lighting & the role of the Art Director
+ color control and maintaining the electronic signal
+ audio mixing techniques plus mixing, foley and compression
+ Internet video & audio streaming strategies
+ non-linear editing utilizing Final Cut Pro plus dedicated audio editing and mixing software.
To add more to the above … the study of film design and producing … and the program becomes a personal challenge to absorb, learn and perform the emerging role of the HD Digital Filmmaker.
